<p>However, there is another method and that is exercise. You can either exercise a lot and eat more or less what you like or exercise a bit and be wary with what you eat as well. If you choose to exercise a great deal, the manner that it will work for you is by raising your rate of metabolism and strengthening your heart.</p>
<p>Before embarking on an exercise routine, you should talk to your physician, particularly if you have not carried out much exercise for a long time. Your physician will almost certainly advise you to do mild types of exercise such as rambling for an hour a day (two times thirty minutes) until you are within a stone or so of your target weight. Swimming in a swimming pool is another good alternative.</p>
<p>Exercise can have a pretty rapid impact on your cholesterol levels. In fact, it will have a faster impact than dieting, but the best manner to go is to eat less HDL (saturated fats, trans fats and hydrogenated fats) and exercise as well.</p>
<p>When you are exercising a great deal more, keep in mind to hydrate your body by drinking plenty of water. Water, not soda or caffeinated drinks or beer. Merely water and at least two litres a day, which is approximately eight tumblers full.</p>
<p>You can also imbibe water by eating watery fruits like watermelons and other fruits, which would kill two birds with one stone as eating fruit is seen as a way of staving off cancer.</p>

<p>Too much LDL in our blood streams can result in clogging which in turn would lead to higher blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. So what can you do about it? There are three prongs you can use to attack cholesterol: diet, exercise and medication. Most individuals do not want to be on medication each day for life, but some do not object.</p>
<p>So, the first thing to do is get into the routine of exercising each day. The minimum exercise you need to be doing is walking for thirty minutes each morning and each evening. You may think that you do not have an hour a day to spare, but you probably do.</p>
<p>If you have a lunch break, what do you do in it? Eat? Read the paper? Have a talk? OK, why not choose a greengrocer&#8217;s that is fifteen minutes walk away and go and buy an apple each day? In the evening, you could go for a walk with your spouse or your dog. In that fashion, you have just thirty minutes to find in order to stay healthy.</p>
<p>How can food lower your cholesterol? Well, there is cholesterol in almost everything we eat, so it is a question of learning which sort of cholesterol is in which food and being selective. In general, this means avoiding food that is high in saturated fats and trans or hydrogenated fats and eating more foodstuff that has mono- or poly-unsaturated fats.</p>
<p>This is not as difficult as it sounds anything you buy in a tin or a tub will or ought to have the sorts of fat written in the contents list. You will just have to learn which fresh food is good for you. Basically, red meat and dairy products are not particularly good for you. Try swapping skinless chicken and fish for beef and pork. Drink skimmed milk, if you have to drink milk and give up butter.</p>
<p>In fact, some margarines have been specially made to reduce cholesterol and, yes, they do work, it is not a scam. It is often said that liver and eggs are high in cholesterol, but according to the British Heart Foundation, our bodies cannot access this cholesterol, so it is OK to include them in a low cholesterol diet.</p>
<p>Fresh fruit and vegetables are the real allies in the battle against high cholesterol. Bananas are particularly good and so are citrus fruits. Nuts are also healthy for you and in particular almonds and walnuts. Tofu and other soya bean foodstuffs are useful and will even lower cholesterol.</p>
<p>Roughage and fibre are very good for reducing cholesterol and one of the best meals you can have is a dish of porridge in the morning for breakfast.</p>

<p>The grapefruit diet was or is an example of a fad diet. People wanted to accept as true that you could lose weight just by eating. The trouble with these fad diets is that their slimming effect is only temporary, because you cannot eat no more than cabbage or grapefruit for the rest of your life, so the weight comes back as soon as you go back to normal.</p>
<p>&#8216;If you always do what you always done, you will always get what you always got&#8217; is a true saying. But what is worse is that a lot of of these diets can be injurious to your health.</p>
<p>However, do not think that fad diets are a new phenomenon. Fad diets or fad medicines have an ancient history going back to fake witch doctors, medicine men and quack doctors who doubled as barbers! Fad practitioners have a long and scandalous history and they are still alive and doing very well, thank you very much, today.</p>
<p>These days, medicine is too strictly regulated for them, so they have turned their attention to gullible, despondent dieters. Most of those that take up a fad diet are overweight teens longing to look like their favourite movie star.</p>
<p>Fad diets usually concentrate on reducing or completely eliminating carbohydrates. It is the low intake of carbohydrates that brings about the rapid loss of weight. In fact, this quick loss is due to the quick loss of water that these low-carb diets stimulate. Much of the fat might still be there, so that when you stop the diet, your body re-absorbs its normal amount of water and the lost weight is put back on just as fast as it was discarded.</p>
<p>In the normal course of events, carbohydrates are the source of energy for work and exercise, but with these fad diets, the carbs are no longer there, so the body begins to break down its store of fat. This may appear advantageous but it is not necessarily so. The ketones resulting from the breakdown of fat are excreted via urine and often increased volumes of urine, which can result in dehydration. People with certain medical conditions have to be very careful too; diabetics, for example.</p>
<p>Fad diets are popular, but they can be very detrimental to your body and when they do not have the desired result in the long-term, it can be very depressing leading to comfort eating. This is why many people begin a fad diet, lose weight and are radiant for a month or two, but then slip back when they are approaching their ideal weight. They go back to their old ways and the weight begins to come back. They become depressed, certain that they will never be able to lose weight; they comfort eat some more, maybe giving up any hope of regaining a normal weight permanently.</p>
